Petersham is a residential suburb located six kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the Inner West Council. The suburb is notable for its array of historic homes and public buildings, as well as its extensive Portuguese commercial offerings. Petersham is situated between Leichhardt to the north and Marrickville to the south.
Location
History
Following the European settlement of Australia, Major Francis Grose sent workmen to the area that makes up Petersham today in 1793 to clear the bush to plant corn and wheat. Grose named the area Peters-Ham or Petersham after his native hometown of the same name in Surrey, England. The suburb was largely a farming area until the establishment of Sydney`s train lines in the mid 1800s, when it gradually became subdivided and developed into a residential district. A number of heritage homes and buildings, which still stand proudly today, were constructed during this period. Petersham municipality was incorporated in 1872.

Petersham train station is situated in the centre of the suburb, with a small commercial district found nearby on New Canterbury Road and Audley Street. The suburb`s streets are awash with historic architecture, particularly that dating back to the Victorian Era. Petersham Park is the suburb`s largest green space, and is found in the northwest, opposite Fort Street High School.
