Newtown is a commercial and residential suburb located four kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Sydney and the Inner West Council. Location
History
The Cadigal tribe of the Eora people were the original inhabitants of the area that makes up Newtown today. Following European settlement, Newtown was established as a farming and residential community in the early 1800s. The suburb is named after a grocery store that opened in the district in 1832, named "New Town Stores". In the 19th century, Newtown rapidly developed with agricultural lots being subdivided into Victorian-era terrace houses. While the suburb was largely a working class area and noticeably run down in the first half of the 20th century, in recent decades it has renewed into a coveted suburb once more, with a notable bohemian and LGBTI population.
